What to say when a meeting ends with no decision

Agreement can sound complete while leaving every practical question open. In a weekly project meeting, the organiser thanks everyone for a useful discussion and starts closing the call. Several colleagues have nodded, but nobody has accepted the next action. Interrupting the cheerful ending risks sounding negative. Letting it pass means the same discussion returns next week, with different memories of what was settled. A short request for a recorded decision gives the meeting an output. If no decision was possible, naming the unresolved question is still more useful than declaring progress.

The lines that work here

2 comebacks to explore.

Open “Chinese original” for the Chinese text and pinyin, or “Why it works” for the meaning and wordplay.

There’s nothing wrong with the plan. The problem is that there isn’t one.

When a plan is discussed but never actually written.

Chinese original

方案没问题,问题是没有方案。

Fāng’àn méi wèntí, wèntí shì méi yǒu fāng’àn.

Why it works

One word is reversed: “no problem” becomes “the problem”. The repetition makes the missing document the whole answer.

I’ll take the meeting notes. Could you take care of the decision?

When meetings end without a decision.

Chinese original

会议纪要我来写,决策麻烦您来定。

Huìyì jìyào wǒ lái xiě, juécè máfan nín lái dìng.

Why it works

Both halves are offers, and the second one is the point. Taking the notes is cheap; handing the decision back names who has been avoiding it.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

Intensity depends on tone, context and who’s listening.

When not to use these

#15 · There’s nothing wrong with the plan. The problem is that there isn’t one.

Avoid it in an exploratory session whose purpose was explicitly to gather options; ask when those options will be reviewed.

#18 · I’ll take the meeting notes. Could you take care of the decision?

Skip the joke when a named owner and next action are already recorded, even if the meeting felt frustrating.

Two things not to say

Both of these look like the obvious move. Both hand the conversation back to the other person.

“Well, that was a waste of everyone’s time.”

People start defending their contributions to the meeting. The remaining minutes disappear into proving value instead of recording the next action.

“We all know what happens next.”

Assumed agreement allows each participant to leave with a different plan. Nobody has to name the owner or confirm the expected result.

The short version

Before the call closes, name the decision, the next action or the question that still needs an answer.
