You talk in circles. Afraid a straight line might lead to the truth?

When someone keeps dodging a question.

Chinese original

你说话这么绕,是怕直着走会撞到真相吗?

Nǐ shuōhuà zhème rào, shì pà zhízhe zǒu huì zhuàng dào zhēnxiàng ma?

Why it works

Turning vague speech into “walking in circles” makes the criticism concrete. This is sharp sarcasm, not a neutral request for clarity.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

At workLv1 · Gentle#13

I’ve noted that request. It’s right behind your last request.

Chinese original

这个需求我记下了,排在“上次那个需求”后面。

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

BoundariesLv1 · Gentle#23

You make a good point. I’m keeping my own view.

When you want to keep your opinion without continuing a debate.

Chinese original

你说得很有道理,我保留我的。

Nǐ shuō de hěn yǒu dàolǐ, wǒ bǎoliú wǒ de.

Why it works

Acknowledging someone’s point does not require accepting it. The second half keeps your own position while leaving room to disagree.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv2 · Direct#10

Great suggestion. Let’s not hear it again.

For an unwanted suggestion, or a joke between close friends.

Chinese original

你的建议很好,下次别提了。

Nǐ de jiànyì hěn hǎo, xiàcì bié tí le.

Why it works

A compliment sets up the first half, then the refusal reverses it. A straight “no, thanks” is gentler in a professional conversation.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

Classical witLv2 · Direct#33

A lofty opinion, sir. Pity it has no ground to stand on.

For an opinion that sounds impressive but ignores practical details.

Chinese original

足下高见,可惜高得有点悬空。

Zúxià gāojiàn, kěxī gāo de yǒudiǎn xuánkōng.

Why it works

“Lofty” can mean impressive or high above the ground. The double meaning turns praise into criticism. This is modern classical-style wordplay, not an attributed ancient quotation.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

That’s a direct question. Here’s a direct answer: I’d rather not say.

Chinese original

你问得挺直接,我答得也可以直接:不方便。

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv2 · Direct#02

You should patent “I assumed.” Nobody gets more use out of it.

Chinese original

建议你把“我以为”三个字申请个专利,用得比谁都熟。

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv2 · Direct#03

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv3 · Sharp#04

Chinese original

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv3 · Sharp#06

Of course you’re right. You’ve even managed to convince yourself.

When confidence is being offered in place of evidence.

Chinese original

你说得对,毕竟你连自己都能说服。

Nǐ shuō de duì, bìjìng nǐ lián zìjǐ dōu néng shuōfú.

Why it works

The opening agrees; the ending makes that agreement collapse. It mocks self-assurance rather than disproving the actual claim.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv2 · Direct#07

Your opinion is very creative. Especially the part where it has nothing to do with the facts.

Chinese original

你的观点很有创意,尤其是和事实完全无关这一点。

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv3 · Sharp#08

I was going to argue, then I realized you were just venting.

When an argument has become a venting session.

Chinese original

我本来想反驳,后来发现你只是在表达情绪。

Wǒ běnlái xiǎng fǎnbó, hòulái fāxiàn nǐ zhǐshì zài biǎodá qíngxù.

Why it works

The reply changes the label of the conversation from debate to venting. It can feel dismissive, so it is a poor choice when reconciliation matters.

Original source unverified; not attributed to a historical author.

SarcasmLv2 · Direct#09

That’s not persistence. That’s standing still with extra confidence.

How to make a comeback sharper

Three ways to land a point without a long argument.

01

Reverse the compliment

“Great suggestion. Let’s not hear it again.”

Start with what sounds like agreement, then let the last few words overturn it. The polite opening makes the refusal sting.

Explore sarcastic comebacks
02

Make the criticism concrete

“You talk in circles. Afraid a straight line might lead to the truth?”

Replace a vague insult with an image of what the person is doing. Dodging a question becomes talking in circles.

Read the Chinese original and explanation
03

Know where to end

“You make a good point. I’m keeping my own view.”

Acknowledge the point, keep your view, and stop. A clear ending can do more than another paragraph of explanations.

Chinese insults and comebacks: common questions

How can I roast someone without swearing?

Focus on the remark or contradiction, then give the sentence a turn. A compliment that reverses itself can be sharper than a swear word. Browse sarcastic Chinese comebacks for short replies, or poetic Chinese insults for a more theatrical burn. Neither style is automatically polite.

What should I say to a rude question?

You can question the intrusion without answering it. “I don’t think we know each other well enough for that question.” is a direct option. For unwanted advice, try a short boundary-setting reply.

Are these literal translations?

The English versions aim to preserve the meaning and wit. They may differ from a word-for-word translation. Open “Chinese original” to read or copy the source text.

How should I choose an intensity?

Gentle replies focus on boundaries, direct replies push back, and sharp replies use pointed sarcasm. These are editorial labels; the effect depends on your relationship, tone and situation.

Are the classical-style lines ancient quotations?

The original sources have not been verified. This collection includes modern wordplay and internet expressions. We do not attribute lines to historical writers without a verified source.

Why do only some lines have an explanation?

7 examples include a separate explanation, context and pinyin. Every comeback has an English translation and a Chinese original to copy.

Where are my saved comebacks stored?

Only in this browser. They do not sync between devices and are removed when you clear site data. If storage is blocked, favorites last for the current visit only.

What if copying does not work?
